In Indore, we are currently pursuing a dual-objective project in partnership with Basix / Indian Grameen Services, one of the leading livelihoods promoters founded by Vijay Mahajan. IGS works across the country on different livelihoods issues, and in Indore they are focused on waste pickers. To this end, they have established scrap collection points, a recycling plant, and seven decentralized composting units which have built a great foundation for waste picker empowerment. However, they haven’t been able to reach break even over the last two years, thus missing the impact to waste picker livelihoods.
Our first objective in partnering with them is to identify ways to turn their operations around, and then to grow them into a commercial entity which can sustain itself free from dependence on grants.
Below is a brief video overview of their work.
