Waste Ventures uses a new paradigm of solid waste management to transform the system by using market capital rather than government contracts. The blueprint draws upon implemented lessons from accomplished solid waste management entrepreneurs. The model generates jobs for waste pickers who collect the garbage for a fee and sort the waste into recyclables to be sold. The separated organic waste is composted and made into bio-fertilizer for sale. Finally, the GHG emission reductions are sold on the CER or VER markets. This creates a diverse income portfolio that financially benefits waste pickers, the implementing entrepreneur, and investors while minimizing reliance on government contracts.

Waste Ventures provides technical assistance to social organizations that work with waste pickers to transform them into waste picker corporations. We provide them with a triple bottom line blueprint (fee-for-service collection, recycling, composting, monetizing carbon credits, and creating biogas) and then assist the transition of the organization’s capital to the waste pickers themselves.

Further, as part of the work with these waste picker organizations, Waste Ventures are executing Learning Labs identifiying and researching the challenges and solutions of operating commercially viable and sustainable waste management services.
